Applying for Random Jobs

In the last week, I've inquired about and sent out resumes to so many different companies for so many different job openings. I really think it's time for me to move on from my current job or at least get an additional job because I need the money.

But I did want to share with everyone some of the jobs that I have applied for. Some are pretty normal and would be awesome to get because of the money or because it's what I want to do. And then some are just kinda funny and I think is just nice to think about.

1. Apple Store - I've wanted to work for Apple for so long. It's not secret that I'm an Apple Fanboy. And this week, one of my friends who already works at Apple referred me and sent in my resume to the managers. So hopefully something comes of it.

2. High School Summer School Math Teacher - I stumbled upon this opening the other night. The education budget in California is in such bad place so I think a lot of people will be jumping on this opportunity. But hopefully they'll at least consider me. This would be a perfect way for me to see if I REALLY like teaching because it'll only be for the summer. And the pay is pretty good.

3. Various Disney Openings - As a Disney employee, I have access to all the job openings within the larger Disney company. And there are TONS of openings... most of which I'm not exactly qualified for, but I still applied to them. Some are management positions. Some are actually related to education. We'll see if I even get a reply from any of those.

4. Ice Rink - I talked about my interest in figure skating and how I'm going to be training. I'm going to be writing a more in depth post about that soon. But my new interest in skating doesn't come cheap. Each time I go and practice on the ice is $8. I'm taking some classes that allow me some free sessions, but it's really not enough if I want to get really good at it. So I decided to apply to be a Skate Guard (like a lifeguard, but on the ice rink) and Box Office Cashier at two skating rinks nearby. I'm hoping that either of those jobs would allow me free time on the ice. I actually really hope I get this!

Now here comes the fun ones...

5. Go Go Dancer - I randomly was thinking about how I need more money and what are the best ways to get the money quickly and easily. Well, all of a sudden, being a go go dancer popped into my head. I've never really thought about doing this... most likely because I think it'd be totally awkward and I know people would be judging me. BUT, I thought about how much tips go go dancers must get every night! Now, I don't even know if I have a chance.. but I inquired about upcoming go go dancer auditions for Gameboi at Rage, a club in West Hollywood where on Friday nights it's Asian night. I went to the website and those go go dancers are RIPPED. I'm nowhere CLOSE to what they look like.. but if I can find out when auditions are, maybe I can workout more often. I will have an actual goal, which may help motivate me more. But I'm definitely keeping this as a possibility.

6. Cameraman/Prod Assistant for Randy Blue! - OK this one is the best! HAHA. I follow Randy Blue on Twitter and one day, they tweeted that they needed a part time cameraman/production assistant and to email them if interested. Well, I jumped at the chance. Why not, right?! Filming hot guys have sex?? C'mon! Best job ever! I emailed them asking for more information and they replied. Pay is decent and the hours would be pretty nice. I'd still be able to keep my regular job too. So I emailed them my resume (not that it would help because I don't think a Masters in Teaching would help me be a porn site production assistant). So I'm not really holding my breath for this one, but I just think it's totally funny and awesome that I jumped at the opportunity.

So there you have it... the various jobs that I applied for this past week. That's a lot, huh? I guess we'll see if anything comes of this. I really hope I get a reply or two. Like I said, the ice rink one, I really want to get. It'd be in addition to my normal job, and it'll help me get more skating in. So it's really the biggest win-win for me at this point. Please keep your fingers crossed for me and send your positive thoughts this way. Thanks guys. :)

Vegas Again? and Again?

If you've been reading my blog, then you know that I go to Vegas a lot. It's because I have friends that LOVE to drink and party and just go crazy. And Vegas is just about the perfect place for that. It's relatively close (4 hour drive) so we can always go on our days off from work for a day or two. It's just fun to go out and night and have fun with your friends.

Well, I was just there this past Wed/Thurs. Had an amazing time just being goofballs. The first night didn't end up all too well though. One of my friends went off to find a hookup so that left only 5 of us. Then another two of them were horsing around and one of them pushed the other into a bush and he kinda toppled over a bit, so he got him back and pushed him back into the bushes. But he picked a bad time to do it because it was a weak spot in the bushes and he fell right through. So for a second, he was lost in the bushes and had to have someone help him up. For the rest of the night, the two didn't talk to each other. And so the one that fell through the bushes and his girlfriend went back to the hotel room early. Which meant only 3 of us were left. The 3 of us made the best of our time together and did more walking around and drinking. But then when we were calling a night and heading back to the hotel room, one of us got an email that he had been waiting for regarding an audition. And the email wasn't good. He didn't get the job. So he was bummed out when we got back to the room. And to top it off, the one that went off for a hookup came back earlier than expected, crying, and went straight to the corner of the room and cried himself to sleep on the floor. HAHA. DRAMA!

The next day was a brand new day and we started off with a lunch buffet at the Mirage hotel. YUMMO! That put us all back into a good mood. And we were back to being one big happy family :) Buffets are just awesome!

Well, it's now Saturday. And I'm home with family after a long day at work. Guess where I'm going with my family tomorrow for 3 days? VEGAS! HAHA. I didn't tell my family that I went to Vegas already with my friends. It's gonna be a different Vegas experience with my family. They actually love to go to Vegas. As a family, we go almost every year at least 3 or 4 times. Whenever there's a holiday, Vegas is usually the top vacation spot for us. But that's because my family likes to eat. We are probably going to be at the buffets ALL the time. HAHA. Not sure what else we could do... we have two little ones coming along so they really can't do much. We'll see! But we're staying at the Venetian so I'm looking forward to it!

And just an update on the job hunt. Apple has not replied to me yet. No emails or phone calls back. Bummer... I decided against calling that phone number I found online. If they want me, they'll call me. In other news, I may actually be trying to take over for my choir director when he retires, which might be at the end of this year. I just emailed him about the possibility of student teaching under his apprenticeship and allowing me to teach/direct a few songs for the Concert Choir this spring and he agrees that it's an excellent idea. I hope that this happens because that would be REALLY awesome. I would LOVE to teach choir as a living! Wish me luck on this!

Well that was short lived...

Got an email at 4:30pm today...
I regret to inform you that due to changes in our staffing at the high school, we will not be hiring a part-time math teacher at this time. We highly encourage you to check Edjoin on a continuous basis in the event openings occur in the future. Thank you for your interest in XYZ Unified School District. We wish you the best of luck in securing a teaching position during these difficult economic times.
So much for teaching. HA. I guess it's better this way. I really don't know how I would've driven all the way up to XYZ 5 days a week. Major traffic on the freeways that I'd take. It would have probably taken me close to 1.5 - 2 hours to get there because of the traffic. WAY too much time in a car. I did that during my last year at UCLA and I promised myself I would never make such a long commute again!

So... I guess teaching is off the table again, for now. I had my Bank of America phone interview this morning too. It went well enough... but I think it was obvious that I had just woken up. You know how your voice is deeper and less energetic right when you wake up no matter how hard you try? Yea... I had that. And because I had just woken up, I don't really remember how well I spoke, how clear I was with my answers, or how believable my lies were... :P But I guess I'll keep everyone updated on that.

Teaching...

Hey, remember when I wrote that one blog about not wanting to teach yet?

HA... well, about 15 minutes ago, I submitted an application for a part time position teaching 9-12th grade Algebra at my former high school. I randomly went on the website (EdJoin.org) that teachers go through to search for teaching positions and randomly looked at my former high school's section. And when I saw that they had a part time position, I got really excited about it. That's exactly what I wanted. Something that doesn't take up all my time, since it would only be 3 periods a day, and a perfect way to ease into teaching. And it would only be the 2nd semester, which starts February 2nd and ends June 11th. And it's the subject I want to teach and the age group I want to teach.

Sigh... the only problem is I wasn't ready for this at all. The deadline for submitting this application was TODAY. This morning, to be exact. And I didn't have everything ready to be submitted. See, we have to scan our official documents/certificates and submit them as attachments. Well, I never scanned my official transcripts from UCLA or UCI. So I only have unofficial school records to send them. I'm pretty sure that's a deal breaker with them. I did email the contact person to explain the situation, and hope they'll understand and still consider me for an interview. Who knows...

Funny thing is, the contact person is one of my childhood friend's mom. hehe. I've known her since 1st grade, when I first moved to the US and started school here. We went through elementary school, middle school, and high school together. So I Facebook-ed her, and told her that I just emailed her mom. LOL. I didn't blatantly imply that she should talk to her mom on my behalf... but I hope she got the hint!!

Well anyway, wish me luck with an interview for the position... I actually do kind of want this!

Response to Comments

I just wanted to write a post to say thanks for the well wishes from everyone on my last post.

But I just wanted to reply to a specific comment from exalen. I actually already posted a reply comment, but I wanted to write it as a post because I think everyone should read it to know a bit more about my situation.

Here's exalen's comment:
Dude, hate to have to be the voice of reason here, but I gotta ask you for a reality check.

The world is falling apart economically atm, and I think you need to play all the cards you got. If you're prepared to work at Starbucks and BOA then what is stopping you from actually using that teaching/econ degree you worked so hard for?

Since you're working towards your masters I assume you don't hate that industry. Maybe you don't love it as much as Disney, but I don't think you can afford to put all your eggs in one basket here.

Dieney may have been fun and I know you had some good times. But times change and life is not a static thing. You have to roll with the punches and adapt to survive.

Of course I wish you best of luck, and I'd love to be able to tel you to follow your dreams and damn the rest, but I also have to be the devil's advocate and ask you to look at the bigger picture and consider your long term future.

If you value your independance and want to maintain living by yourself then you have to look at all your options. Not just the easy/fun ones.

Well, here's my reply to exalen:
Thanks for playing devil's advocate. I need to hear it every once in a while.

I'm prepared to work for Stabucks and BOA because I know that working hours would work with Disney. My job at Disney doesn't require me to be there until after 2pm. Therefore a part time job at the other places in the morning is ideal.

I'm getting a Masters due to pressure from my family. Unfortunately, I don't have much of a passion for teaching. I used to. And then I went through the teaching credential program and lost it. Just wasn't what I thought. And then the opportunity to get a Masters was available so I took it because it was a relatively simple and quick way to get a Masters degree. And it made my family happy.

But you're so right about wanting to be independent and living alone... which is why I will be looking for a teaching job this Spring to start in Fall of 09. By that time, I will have received my Masters degree, which puts me at a higher pay scale. So I feel like it would be a little bit more worth it to start teaching at that time. Plus, I do plan to stay part time with Disney even after finding a teaching job.

But thanks again, exalen, for being a voice of reason. I really appreciate it
